Washington D.C. Trip – June 2013

I asked Marvin what he wanted to do to celebrate his retirement from the United States Postal Service aka "The Post Office" and he decided he wanted to go to Washington D.C.  Now prior to our leaving I had asked friends on facebook for some suggested “must see” spots and contacted my Congressman’s office to schedule some congressional tours.  We were about as prepared as I thought we needed to be so off we went.

Mom and Dad drove us to the airport so we didn’t have to leave our car there and pay for parking.  Thanks Mom & Dad!!  We left out of Dallas Love Field (DAL) and boy it has really changed since the last time that we flew out of there.  It is looking really good!  There was a long line to go through security but it was moving pretty fast.  We were excited to start our adventure.

After we were through security we looked for somewhere to get a bite to eat.

Can’t go wrong with Whataburger, right?

This is my OOTD (Outfit Of The Day) that I wore on the way to D.C.

It was a very quick flight to Austin and we were ready to get going!

3 here we go

Our in-flight snack consisted of a complimentary beverage and some peanuts!  Yummy!

We landed and since we had some time before our next flight we found a place to get some lunch.

5 layover in austin

6 lunchtime

We boarded our next flight which was going to be about a 5 hour trip so I made sure to use the restroom before boarding.  As I got settled in my seat I realized something.  I had to go to the bathroom.  Again.  And I’m on the plane.  For real.  Those bathrooms are so tiny and then you have to stand so close when you flush…ugh!!!  Those that know me well know I really have an issue with public restrooms much less a very cramped small bathroom.  But I went anyway and I survived and my bladder thanked me.

7 off we go again

The flight attendants served another great in-flight snack.

Something that I like to do when I am on a flight is to peruse the safety brochure.  Take a look at this pic.

9 pics in the safety brochure

First of all, does anyone still own a transistor radio?  Second of all, who brings a remote control car on a plane?  Does that happen?

Here’s another pic for y’all.  If we were to be judging this like a contest, who would win?

10 pics in the safety brochure

My vote is for the lady on the right.  Not only is she holding a baby but she also is pointing her toes which earns her extra points for form.  Other than me amusing myself with the safety brochure our flight was uneventful.

We landed and were so glad to make it to DC!  We did rent a car but only because we would be traveling to Fredericksburg, VA the next day but otherwise you truly can get around everywhere riding the Metro

11 we made it!!

We had booked a hotel at The Virginian Suites and the guy at the front desk, Edward, was awesome!  He is actually the first one to ever acknowledge our Gold Level status…not like it really matters but apparently they are supposed to do it and no one has ever done that before.  So Edward, the front desk guy, automatically got brownie points.

Here are some pics from our room.  The price was pretty reasonable and in addition to the nice sized bedroom and bathroom the room had a spacious living room, small dining room and a mini kitchen (fridge, stove/oven, sink, dishwasher) that was stocked with plates, flatware etc. so you could cook some of your meals to save money.

We dropped off our bags, freshened up a bit and headed back to the front desk.  Since we were new in town and hungry we asked for a dinner recommendation.  Edward, the front desk guy, suggested Quarter Deck Restaurant and said it was “just up the road”.  According to the Quarter Deck Restaurant website, the Quarter Deck is a fixture of the Fort Meyer Heights neighborhood for over 30 years providing a relaxed atmosphere perfect for family dining or just catching up with old friends.  Most notably known for their seasonal Maryland Blue Crab feast and cold bear, they also serve a wide variety of classic American and Seafood fare year round.

Well we headed that way not knowing that when he said up the road he meant literally up the road because it was up a hill.  The fact that I am out of shape was immediately noted.  ;)  We arrived and now we were not only hungry but hot and tired.

Quarter Deck was crazy busy.  As in beyond crazy busy.  It was so crowded, (how crowded was it??) that they were puling extra tables from some store room in the back and setting up a makeshift dining area next to the patio to seat additional customers.  All that really did was strain the wait staff who were already overwhelmed.  Nevertheless we chose to stay as we didn’t really have any other options in the area that we were aware of and when asked if we minded sharing a table with strangers we agreed.

We sat with Rob, Jackie and Kyle and even though it seemed a little weird to share a table with strangers it ended up being really fun!  We chatted about a lot of different things and laughed a lot.  It was a really fun night.  I didn’t take any pic of my food or our new friends but the trio ordered crabs and despite the fact that I am not a seafood fan the crabs are seasoned with Old Bay Seasoning and they smelled really good!!

Our first evening in DC was a success!!

Crochet Bead Necklace

In my pursuit of becoming Ms. Hobby Lobby I stumbled across a post about a crochet bead necklace that I thought I'd give a try.  I mean how hard can it be?  ;)

The materials you need to make this are some crochet thread, I used Aunt Lydia's crochet thread in size Classic 10 (I clearly bought MORE than enough), a size B crochet hook and some beads.

You first need to string the beads onto the thread.  I ran into some trouble trying to do this as the head of the needles I tried to use were too big for the opening of the smaller beads.  I resorted to getting out a needle threader and doing it that way.  Took a little longer but worked just fine.

Then begin with a simple chain stitch, I started with 10.  I then brought a bead up and did a chain stitch to anchor it.  I then crocheted 3 more chain stitches and then pulled another bead up.  I continued on until I had used all the beads.

I think it turned out pretty cute and it was super easy to make!

Total cost of this project was $8.98 = $2.99 for the thread and I obviously have a TON left over so you could purchase a much smaller amount but I have this crafter's fear of not having enough to complete the project and then if I go back to get more they won't have what I need.  So yes, I overbought.  And it was $5.99 for the beads. I had a coupon for the thread so I got it for $1.79 at Michaels and the beads were on sale for $2.99 at Joanns so my total cost was $4.78.  I have some beads left over to make some earrings and a ridiculous amount of crochet thread for a future project.

Florentine Chicken

I love trying new recipes.  This one was originally called Lemon Florentine Chicken but I did some variations to it so I'm just calling it Florentine Chicken. :)

Here's what you need:

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts

1 can (18 oz) Progresso Recipe Starters creamy Parmesan basil cooking sauce

1 box (9 oz) frozen chopped spinach, thawed, squeezed to drain

2 tsp grated lemon peel

Here's what I did:

The original recipe is from the Betty Crocker website and involved frying and other steps.  I opted to take a different route to make this dish.  I put the chicken in a baking dish, seasoned it, added some pats of butter and baked it for an hour at 250.

I then added the cooking sauce and the spinach and let it set in the oven while I made some spaghetti.  I did not use the grated lemon peel as I didn't have any on hand.

This is how it turned out

As you can see I served it on a bed of spaghetti noodles.  For me the thing about trying new recipes is that I hope that I'll find one that is a keeper.  For me this recipe was unfortunately, not one of them.  It was a little on the bland side and although it met my requirements for have just a few ingredients and being easy to make it just didn't wow me enough to want to add it to my recipe file.  If you try this recipe let me know how it turned out for you. :)

Coffee Filter Craft

I am really gung ho for this crafting thing right now and I also realize that it's only January 10th so it's hard to pat myself too much on the back just yet.  That being said I came across several packages of unused coffee filters.  About 6 months ago I had thrown out about 8 packages so I knew that we weren't going to use these either.  I decided to look up on Pinterest things that I could do with coffee filters.

I found a really cute garland so I decided to try it and make something for an upcoming baby shower at work.

Here's what you need:

Coffee filters

Food coloring

Glue gun

Now I had read the instructions on several projects but when it came time to do it I decided to just wing it.

I gathered the coffee filters, some red food coloring (my project was going to be pink for the baby shower), and a pot with cold water

I put some red food coloring in the pot of cold water then added all the coffee filters.  I let them set for just a bit and then wrung them out.  You can wring them out pretty good as they are not too flimsy.  I then tried to just air dry them by leaving them out.  They were taking forever so I put them in the dryer.  Now I checked on them every 30 seconds or so because I didn't want anything catching on fire and they dried really quickly that way.

Next I took them individually and folded them in half then brought up the other two sides to make the beginning of a flower shape.

After folding I stapled them at the bottom to hold them together.

I then got out my glue gun and started to glue them into a white coffee filter.

The original plan was to make a bunch of little flower balls but things didn't go quite as planned.

The flower didn't look full enough to me.  Hmmm....not sure really what to do as the original plan also included gluing the two of the above flowers together but like I said, it was not looking as full as I was wanting it to.

So I ended up just making a big flower ball and this is the finished product!

So while in my mind it was going to be several much smaller flower balls I'm still pretty happy with how it turned out.

I wonder what will be my next project??  What is yours??

::UPDATE::
Here is a pic of how it looked in the break room.  Notice how we took it old school with the decorations by adding the paper chain!

Christmas Gift Tags

So one of my "resolutions" for 2013 was to do at least two crafty things a month and so my first project was to repurpose a gift box into gift tags.

One of my gifts this Christmas came in a super cute box with snowmen, penguins and Santas on it.  I LOVE snowmen so even though the bottom of the box was not reusable I wanted to do something with the top.  I had used some Christmas cards from years past as Christmas tags (not an original idea I know) and figured that I could just cut the box into little squares and make gift tags out of it.  Now it would have been awesome if I had taken a pic of the box before I cut it up but you'll just have to use your imagination but here's the finished product.

ms hobby lobby 003

On the left you'll see a larger snowman that was also from a gift box and one towards the bottom that was from some paper.  I'm still not sure what I will use them for but they are ready for some fun future crafting!  :)

What types of crafting have you done lately?
