Past Adventures – OKC 4/2006, part 3

More from our OKC Spring Break trip……

Saturday morning we got up and ate our free breakfast complete with waffles.  I love it when they have waffles as a part of the breakfast.  I just think the day is off to a great start when you have waffles warming your heart.

We exited to Highway 77 to visit the Timberlake Rose Rock Museum located in Noble OK.  It’s a small museum but cool nonetheless.  You can even buy rose rocks and learn more about the story behind them.

We also stopped in Lexington to see the VW Bug Spider.  Another stop that we recommend that you don’t miss is the Great Fire and Explosion Museum in Ardmore.  Seriously you need to go because it was cool and it was FREE!!  One of the artifacts that they had was a flask with an etching of a naked woman sitting on it.  My daughter ~S~ saw it and said ewwww!  A nudity bottle!  Haha!  I’m not sure about that but we sure laughed about it.

We ate at Braum’s.  It seems like they have a million of them in Oklahoma.  Okay, maybe not a million but they sure do have a lot of them.  While we were eating this girl walks by with a banana split.  It looked good so I said, “Mmmmm, that looks good!” and she heard me and looked at me like I had said I want to lick your toes or something.  Of course I did not want to lick her toes but what I did want was my own ice cream.  We all got ice cream and then headed the rest of the way home.  :)

Past Adventures – OKC 4/2006, part 2

We toured the State Capitol of Oklahoma and it only took about an hour.

Not too bad.  We were joined by a 4th grad class which went better than expected.  ;)

We also toured the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum and it was awesome and a very moving memorial.  We really encourage everyone to visit but be sure and go early so you have plenty of time to take in all there is to see.

We then headed to Arcadia OK to visit The Round Barn.  We met Butch and he was such a hoot to talk to!  I bought one of his famous $1 ink drawings.  Butch was so awesome and we learned many interesting facts about round barns in America.  He even threw in a couple of jokes to keep us entertained.  ;)

We then headed to the National Cowboy and Heritage Museum.  I’ll be honest, it wasn’t really my cup of tea but it was still interesting nonetheless.

We ate at our favorite restaurant in OKC which is Ted’s.  Tyler was our waiter and he was awesome and the food was muy delicioso!  Next time you are in OKC stop by Ted’s Cafe Escondido located at 2836 NW 68th St.  You’ll be glad you did!

On our way back to our hotel we passed through the Asian community.  I don’t think it is officially called the Asian community but the street signs were in English and another language.  We saw the Braum's Milk Bottle.  It was a random sighting and therefore very cool.

I am always interested in odd and unusual things and I make everyone else go along for the ride.  They may resist at first but resistance is futile and we always end up having a fun time.  After all that it was back to Whitten Inn where we indeed purred like kittens.

Past Adventures - OKC 4/2006, part 1

We arrived at our hotel which was not as close to downtown OKC as we had anticipated. Add to that the girls restroom was being renovated as was the pool and it just gave us an unsettled feeling. We thought to ourselves, hmmm, maybe we should find a different hotel. And so we did and we chose the Whitten Inn.

We decided to go and eat breakfast somewhere and as we exited the hotel I noticed across the street there was a restaurant named Gramma Max's. I shouted, "There's Gramma Max's!" for no apparent reason. Well that was the name of the restaurant but why it excited me is a mystery. I had never eaten there or even heard of the place but seeing the sign stirred something inside me. I probably need to have that checked out.

We ate breakfast at Charly's. Ever been there? It's right off the highway and it was good and it was cheap. I mean, it was inexpensive.

Shirley was our waitress and she was pretty nice. When our food was ready she brought it to the table and said, "Soups on!" and we thought it was pretty funny. So check it out and ask for Shirley and tell her I sent you. She won't remember me and it won't make sense to her but we can all share a laugh or two.

We drove to our new hotel called "The Whitten Inn" where their motto is, "When you sleep with Whitten, you purr like a kitten." If you are going to have a motto that's a pretty nice one. On some of the doors there are red cards. We asked what that was about and they said that nurses who worked the night shift at the local hospital were asleep in those rooms. Apparently they rent them by the week. We've never seen that before so that was interesting.

We actually got an unexpected discount from The Whitten Inn. We were initially quoted a price of $79 and when we were talking with the lady at the front desk we were talking about budgets. She said if the price is not in your budget, what is? I said $65 and she said she could lower it to $67. What else is there to say besides....okay.

We freshened up in our hotel room and headed to the State Capitol. To be continued.....
